India and Two Numbers: From Counterpoint Research
Counterpoint puts India's third quarter smartphone fall at 20 per cent and Omdia at 26 per cent. Both agree on direction, and the 6 point gap is a reason to name the tracker with every figure.
India's smartphone market fell sharply in the third quarter of 2026. The size of the fall depends on the tracker. Counterpoint Research reports a 20 per cent year on year fall in shipments in July to September. Omdia, as reported by GSMArena on 27 October 2026, reports a 26 per cent fall in the same quarter. The gap is 6 points. That gap is the story, because it shows how uncertain even a sharp fall can be when two trackers measure the same market.
Both trackers agree on direction, and agree the quarter was the weakest in a decade, or close to it. Counterpoint calls the total the lowest level in a decade. Omdia, as reported by GSMArena, calls it the lowest level since 2016. The difference in wording is small. The difference in the headline figure is not, at 6 points, and no unit total is given in either public summary to reconcile it. Counterpoint notes its figures are preliminary estimates, subject to revision. That note should stay with the 20 per cent figure, and the 26 per cent figure should stay with Omdia's name.
Counterpoint gives the segment detail. Shipments of phones below INR 20,000 fell 47 per cent year on year in the third quarter, according to Counterpoint. Rising prices pushed models into higher price bands, with pressure particularly strong below INR 15,000, where consumers held phones longer and deferred upgrades. Omdia's public summary, as reported by GSMArena, gives no sub-INR 20,000 figure, so the 47 per cent fall is Counterpoint's alone.
Record high memory prices are the cause named by both reports. Brands held lean inventory even ahead of the festive season. Counterpoint expects India's market to shrink by around 13 per cent in 2026, with another price hike round after the festive season sale. The certain statement is narrow. India's market contracted sharply in the third quarter. The bottom segment contracted almost by half, on Counterpoint's figures. The exact total fall is 20 per cent on one tracker and 26 per cent on another, and citing one figure without naming its tracker hides that uncertainty.
